Why New Year’s Resolutions are Hard

Why New Year’s Resolutions are Hard

Every time the new year arrives, millions of people vow to create and stay with a new resolution or two. But what makes these New Year’s resolutions so difficult to stick to? Whether you want to achieve a massive goal or just do something small to change your lifestyle, it’s tough to maintain your motivation and keep yourself on the right track. Your New Year’s resolution might hit a snag from:

  • Not being realistic
  • Lack of self-control
  • Not enough support
  • Not forgiving yourself for mistakes

You’re Not Being Realistic

Too often, people set lofty goals for themselves that they will likely never achieve. It’s definitely more difficult to stick to a resolution if you create a dream or goal for yourself that’s almost impossible to accomplish in the span of one year. Instead, set smaller and more realistic goals you can accomplish in bite-sized chunks. This will make it a whole lot easier when it’s time to reach for the stars. Remember to stay grounded and take small steps toward your main resolution or else you could set yourself up to fail without even knowing it.

Self-Control is Tough

Let’s face it: most goals we set for ourselves involve some form of self-control. Whether it’s quitting alcohol or trying to lose weight, temptations are all around us. If you’re having a tough time avoiding these temptations, try to develop new tools to help you resist them. For example, if you want to stop smoking, talk to your doctor and find out about prescription medications that could help you. Join a support group if you need to lose weight and do things that will nudge you toward making better decisions instead of caving in.

You Have No Support

If you don’t have an awesome support system behind you, sticking to your resolution can be exceptionally tough. Make sure you have at least one person who knows about your goal so they can motivate you and hold you accountable. Ideally, you should find a group of people who have the same mindset so that it’s easier to get your goals accomplished. Without a good person or group of people in your corner, sticking to resolutions is much more difficult.

You’re Too Hard on Yourself

When you falter, it’s easy to beat yourself up and then give up on your dreams. The best way to avoid this is to remember that everyone makes mistakes, and that failure is often the first step toward success. Instead of berating yourself or feeling frustrated, brush yourself off and move forward. Everyone slips now and again, and as long as you forgive yourself and continue forward, you can still accomplish anything you set your mind to.

In order to accomplish your New Year’s resolutions, you need to recognize why they’re so difficult to stick to so you can take steps to make things easier. With a bit of support and some baby steps, you can achieve your goals without losing your motivation. Remember to ask for help when you need it and always look for support from others to help you achieve your dreams.
