Seven Reasons to Move to a Different State in Your 20s or 30s

So, you’re seriously considering moving out-of-state? What are you waiting for?! Leaving home in your 20s and 30s is often easier since you have less tying you down. Once you’re properly adulting (like owning a home, having a family, and an established career) moving gets difficult. That doesn’t mean that you can’t move, it just means it can be a pain.

You could also be at a point in your life in your 20s and 30s where you have established yourself personally and professionally where you live, making it harder to pack up and move. But, assuming that you’re still enjoying a bit of freedom, you can move cross-country more easily.

7 Reasons You Should Consider Moving to A Different State in Your 20s and 30s

1.   You have less stuff to move.

As we get older, we tend to accumulate more possessions. More possessions mean more to lug around.

So, if you’re young and don’t have a lot of stuff weighing you down, it’s much easier to find a new state to call home. Not to mention, that moving checklist is a lot easier when you have less to pack up.

2.   You can couch surf!

If you have any good friends in a state you might like living in, then you could try couch surfing. Just put your stuff into storage and take the bare essentials with you. By staying at a friend’s place, you can avoid signing a lease, so if it turns out you don’t like the area, you can leave! Crashing on your friend’s couch also has the added bonus of saving you money.

3.   You get to explore different states!

Traveling can give you an idea of what part of the country you want to call home. How do you know whether or not something is right for you unless you try it? If a state looks interesting to you, go visit! If your visit turns out awesome,  try staying with a friend for an extended time, or sign a short-term lease while you see if the area grows on you. After that, who knows? Maybe, just maybe, you’ll like it so much that you decide to settle down.

4.     You won’t ruin your kid’s life.

If you don’t have a kid yet, you won’t have to break it to them that they’re about to switch schools. One of the biggest challenges that people with kids face is adjusting to a new home. Obviously, if you’re a young adult and don’t have kids, you can avoid this issue altogether. So, move young to make sure your future child won’t be the dreaded ‘new kid.’

5.   You get to meet new people and have new experiences.

Have you ever felt like you were in a rut? Like your life just wasn’t turning out the way you planned it to? That same thing happens to a lot of people. If that’s the boat you’re in, we have great news for you, you can do something about it!. When you are still young, a cross-country move could be exactly what you need to change your life. Obviously, moving across the country is a real shock to your system. There are new cultures to experience, new weather to acclimate to, and a new city to explore. Scary? Yes. Bad? Absolutely not. When you get new experiences you tend to grow as a person. So here’s to that glow up!

6.   Be what you want to be!

If you move out of state you can explore opportunities that don’t exist in your old city. Have you thought about changing careers lately? What if the career you are most interested in doesn’t have a lot of opportunities where you live? Here’s some more good news, you don’t have to give up on your dreams! Some people, as they age, begin to feel regret over missed opportunities. Regret like that can leave you a bit grouchy when you’re older. So, if you want to try a new career out, don’t be afraid to take the plunge!

7.   Last but not least, moving out of state gives you a chance at a fresh start.

Do you feel like you need a shakeup in your life? Maybe you want to be independent. Maybe you’re tired of your old social scene. Or maybe you just feel like it’s time for a change. Whatever your motivation, moving to a new state gives you a chance to start over. If you want a fresh start, don’t wait until it’s too late to do it.
