View Baytown from the Fred Hartman Bridge

Baytown, and the Houston metro area in general, are about as flat as they come. We don’t have mountains here. Honestly, we have very few hills, either. What we do have, though, is the magnificent Fred Hartman Bridge. A darling of locals who love to run, walk and get above the surrounding flatness, the bridge is free to use. It’s also a must-see if you’re passing through, at least once! The walk back and forth will take you about 2 hours, so make sure you plan for that. Also, plan to see a fantastic view of Baytown you can’t experience anywhere else! (TIP- Park on the Baytown side. There are prime spots at the base of the bridge.)

Things To Do in Baytown: the Wetlands Center

In this part of Texas, wetlands are a big deal. They’re home to a wide variety of wildlife and play a vital role in controlling floods. Plus, they’re natural filters and protect Baytown’s water quality. Unfortunately, due to many factors, wetlands are also endangered. At the Eddie V. Gray Wetlands Education Center, however, children and adults alike learn the beauty and importance of wetlands. Located on Goose Creek, the center opened in 1998 and sees thousands of visitors every year. In its 9000 square feet of space, you’ll find several different exhibits, including:

  • Gator World, featuring juvenile gators and an exquisite wetlands mural.
  • The Land of Milk and Honey, featuring live bee demonstrations with honeybees.
  • The Coastal Connection, which features local salt and freshwater sea life.
  • Wings Over Wetlands, a mural covering an entire wall that shows the immense diversity of wetlands birds.

It’s the oldest operating ferry in Texas, taking folks (and a few cars) across the Houston Ship Channel every day. There are actually two ferries, the William P Hobby and Ross S. Sterling. Built in 1965, both ferries are 62 feet long, which is pretty sizable. The trip itself is quick at under ten minutes. But, and this is the beauty part, it’s free. Yep, ferry rides are free on the Lynchburg Ferry, even for cars! So, again, if you love being out on the water, take a free ferry ride on the Lynchburg Ferry!
