Situated just outside of Danville is the Hess Recreation Area, one of the finest in the Southeast. Sitting on 102 acres, the Recreation Area features a surprisingly diverse number of excellent amenities. For that reason, it’s one of the most popular recreation locations in this part of the nation! Some of the amenities they offer include:

  • 3.9 miles of gorgeous, well-groomed trails.
  • A beautiful Covered bridge (with accessible fishing platform).
  • A 20 x 50; multi-use pavilion with electricity and fire pits.

Go Wild at the Conservators Center Animal Park

If big cats and exotic animals make your adrenaline pump, the Animal Park at Conservators Center is the place to visit! It’s home to over 70 animals (and counting) who were in trouble and needed help for one reason or another. Many of them are big cats, including lions and tigers, all being nursed back to health. The Park gives guided tours that are at once awe-inspiring and eye-opening. It’s about an hour’s drive from Danville, so keep that in mind when making plans. For our money, though, it’s well worth the trip for adults and kids alike.

Get Scientific at the Danville Science Center

Kids and adults alike will be fully engaged at the Danville Science Center! The hands-on activities are a blast, and the Digital Dome Theatre is worth the trip all by itself! Many of the exhibits are interactive, including Go!, Water, and the Creativity Lab. The kids can even design their own sailboat and see if it floats in the Sail the 7 Seas exhibit! The Science Center has events throughout the year, too, with something new always around the corner. It’s one of the most exciting and interesting things to do in Danville, VA!

Indulge Your Inner-Warrior at the AAF Tank Museum

If you’re a history buff interested in the art of war, the AAF Tank Museum is a must-see in Danville! The museum features a wide range of tanks from several wars, including World War I and II. There are over 119 tanks and artillery pieces in their impressive collection! They also have nearly 350 tank and cavalry general uniforms from around the world. It’s an exciting look back at the massive machines that played a part in keeping the world safe for Democracy!

Explore Historic Danville on Danville Historical Society’s Guided Walking Tour

There are many beautiful, historical buildings in Danville, VA, especially on “Millionaires Row.” The venerable Danville Historical Society offers guided walking tours to see them all. In fact, they offer three guided tours with three different themes, including:

  • The “Secrets Inside” tour, made specifically to show off Millionaires Row.
  • The “Tales of Tobacco, Textiles and Trains” tour shows off the Tobacco Warehouse District and its impressive industrial architecture.
  • The “There’s a Story Here” tour shows of the African-American neighborhood, the Holbrook-Ross District, created after the Civil War ended

All three tours are excellent and receive high marks from folks who’ve taken them. If you’re a member of the Danville Historical Society, the tours are free. For all others, there’s a small fee of $10.00 for adults. (Hint: it’s well worth the money if you’re a fan of distinctive architecture.) By the way, all three guided tours are by reservation only.

Enjoy Some Adult Beverages at 2 Witches Brewery

Combining both a microbrewery and winery in one location, 2 Witches is a delightfully tasty treat! A family-run affair, 2 Witches offers live music, new beer releases, and a variety of other exciting and delicious events. Enjoy Lovely Scenery along Danville’s River Walk Trail

Virginia is, no question, a lovely state with an abundance of natural scenery that will take your breath away. Danville’s River Walk Trail shows off these features perfectly as it winds its way along the Dan River. The Trail connects to several parks, including Anglers Park and Dan Daniel Memorial Park. That’s good news for bikers, hikers, and moms with strollers looking to get some exercise and fresh air. There are many trail events during the year, also.
